Manuscript submission for a book or book chapter
Please follow these instructions carefully to ensure that the publication of your book is as efficient as possible.
Electronic manuscripts have the advantage that there is no need for re-keying of the text, thereby greatly reducing the risk of introducing errors during typesetting and resulting in reliable and speedy proofs.

Wordprocessing Software
Word-processing Software: Preference is given to Microsoft Word (PC or Macintosh), but WordPerfect may also be used. To provide a most reliable output, none of the automatic MSWord features should be used (such as indexing chapter numbering and style sheets).  When using EndNote please contact the publisher first.

Length and structure of contribution
The format of the book will be 165 by 240 mm, with approximately 500 words per page (100% text). As a guideline, a double spaced A4 page will contain about 300 words. Please organise your chapter so that, when published, it will be of 25 to 35 pages in length. Please use the following order for your contribution: Title, Author(s), Affiliations, Main text, Acknowledgements, Appendix, and References. Please note that figure legends and tables are placed within the text at their proper places.

Fonts
Only Times New Roman or Times should be used for the text. Helvetica or Arial can be used for graphics.

Manuscript preparation
If your book belongs to a series, please familiarize yourself with the style and arrangement of this series before you start.  If not, you have, of course, more freedom.  It is most important that you be consistent in the organisation of your manuscript. In this respect, pay special attention to:

  • Chapter openings
  • Headings of sections and subsections. Please pay attention to the number of layers of subheadings (ranking to 3 to 4 is usually sufficient) and to the style used to distinguish the layers of subheadings (differences in format and/or numbering).
  • Figure and scheme numbering and citation (Figure; Fig.; Figs.; Arab or Roman numerals; Figure parts labelled with capital or lower-case lettering - check with illustrations; change citation accordingly, not vice versa)
  • Table numbering and citation (Roman or Arab numbering)
  • Equation numbering (flush left/right; chapter number included or not) and citation (eq, eq., Eq., Eqn, with or without parentheses, etc.)
  • Literature citation style and structure of the literature list; see also next section

Use of headings and subheadings
Each chapter of the book will be divided into two basic parts: Background and State of the Art. Please pay attention to the number of layers of further subheadings (3 will usually be sufficient) and to the style used to distinguish the layers of subheadings (differences in format and/or numbering). In this book, we will use a numbering system, so that your chapter should start with the Background section numbered “1”; the next major subdivision will be numbered “1.1”, etc. State of the Art should then begin with the labelling “2”.

References
References should be mentioned in the text as a simple numerical superscript. Please follow the following style for the journal references:

Author Last Name, Author Initials; Journal abbreviation in italics; year in bold; Volume number in italics, first page number. Examples:

Order of material
For multi-authored works, please adhere to the following structure for the chapter:  Title (Title, Author(s), Affiliations), (Abstract), Main text, Acknowledgements, Appendix, References. Figure legends and Tables are placed within the text at their proper places. Make sure that there is a balanced subdivision of the Main text in Sections (headings and subheadings).

Keyboard accuracy
Please take care to distinguish properly between the digit 1 and the letter l (also 0 and O). Use tabs for indents, not spaces or the indent function. In particular when preparing tables, use tabs, not spaces, to align the columns. Type accurately: in processing your manuscript typing errors may stay undetected. Use the spell check of your wordprocessor.

Indexing
Please create a complete list of words to be indexed.  As a rule of thumb, there should be between 1 and 2 keywords for each manuscript page.

Figures and Schemes
Figures and schemes should be embedded into the text as close as possible to the place where they are first mentioned.  All graphics should be supplied according to guidelines described in the separate section.

ChemDraw files
When preparing your files, please use the “apply settings” command to “ACS-1996.cds”. When the drawing is finished, please save this as a TIFF file with 1200 dpi resolution, and then imbed the file directly into the text. When using other chemical drawing programs, please try to adhere to these basic guidelines as closely as possible.

Figure, Equation and Scheme citation
For equation numbering, please flush right with chapter number included. For citation in the text, please use upper case “E” with a period, i.e. “Eq.” ( for example, you will refer to Eq. 3 in the text). Please be consistent with figure and scheme numbering and citation (Figure; Fig.; Figs.; Arab or Roman numerals; Figure parts labelled with capital or lower-case lettering - check with illustrations; change citation accordingly, not vice versa)
